This month’s column discusses the importance of color in communication design. Color is the priority of our visual memory and brands use it to reach us. We perceive and register color subconsciously, by the help of cultural learnings and marketing trends. Blue and red are the most popular among brands. Red is the choice of [...]

love is for the old, opposition for the new… just like the people who wait till valentines day to declare their love for the loved ones, consumers wait till a logo changes to declare their love to the old logo. thanks to social media their reaction is big and heard. thus rebranding projects these days can only survive when the solution is right, the company stands behind their decision and when the new program is introduced within a well-planned launch. gap’s new logo was dead after two days. On the other hand, in 2002 arcelik’s (biggest household appliances manufacturer of Turkey) new logo was a success despite a big initial negative reaction. These days Starbucks claims to be one of the top brands that can say “don’t you know who I am?” by getting rid of the brand name. they are carrying the mermaid to the frontline of their brand and freeing her from the boundaries. however, in my opinion, their recognition lies in the green and black concentric circles rather than the mermaid.
TATİLDE KÖŞE KAPMACA
For the January issue of my HaberTurk column, (M)arka Plan, I discussed the importance of destination branding on the economies of cities and destinations. All recent rebranding efforts of Belfast, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, Melbourne, Sydney were the inspiration. Among others, I wrote about Belfast’s desire to be the city of love after [...]
D FOR DEMOCRATS
Right before the November elections, the Democrats unveiled their ‘new’ logo. Actually, there is nothing new about it. It is very ‘me too’ with a striking resemblance to the Obama campaign logo, very reminiscent of kids alphabet games, and certainly very familiar with its simplicity of just a plain circle and letter d forms. Directness [...]
HONEY BEAR VS. HONEY BEE
As a mother and a designer I appreciate well designed baby food packaging, baby clothes, baby decor, baby anything… I want my kid to grow up surrounded by good design. So I am always on the hunt for all of the above.
HAS MY BELOVED STARBUCKS COMMITTED A CRIME?
I love coffee. My daily skim, no foam latte from Starbucks. I am an exclusive and devoted Starbucks fan. Yes, it is my daily dose of caffeine, but also a daily injection of inspiration. It is just a flawless example of what a brand can do and can become. I love their play on design, [...]
REDESIGNING HONG KONG
I had seen the Brand Hong Kong logo around in various publications, but it wasn’t until 2005 that we officially met. He was handsome, charming and attractive. He was the perfect gatekeeper of the city. A fitting representative, a resourceful tour guide. We had lost touch since but I occasionally caught a [...]
TONIGHT SHOW 1,2,3…
Tonight show is apparently the longest running entertainment show still running in the US. I can’t say I am an avid follower but I occasionally enjoy it. the latest drama with Conan O’Brien certainly put it in my radar again and led me to expect a significant redesign in this day and [...]
OLYMPIC LOGOS
Not being much of a sports person, what gets me most excited about the Olympic season is the design. Especially lately, the glamorous yet problematic inaugurations and public controversies surrounding the Olympic emblems make up for some of the adrenalin.
